Jobs for Engineers in the Chemicals Industry

I think it's pretty common knowledge by now that things have been pretty rough in the job market since mid-2008. While I do think things have improved slightly since the early and middle part of 2009, the job market is still quite depressed. That said, there are still a number of opportunities out there. For maintenance and controls/instrumentation engineers, the market is there and there are quite a few companies with openings for those types of engineers. As far as jobs for chemical engineers go, there are openings, but typically they are in less desirable (rural) locations or the salaries being offered favor those candidates with lower levels of experience. People ask me, do I see it turning around soon? It's a hard question to answer; so far the manufacturing indicators do not suggest much of a rise in production which means that hiring will probably stay at its current levels for awhile. I am hopeful that towards the end of this year, hiring will pick up again, but at this point it's hard to say what will happen. I do know I will continue to work as hard as I can to fill the positions I have open to me and to help out the engineers who come to me for help.
